Last week, PERSEI Space joined the space community at ESA Zero Debris Week 2026 in Seville to discuss one of the key challenges of the rapidly growing space sector: 🌍🛰️ "making spacecraft disposal an autonomous, affordable and reliable part of future missions. 🌍🛰️
As the number of satellites in orbit continues to increase, end-of-life disposal is becoming an increasingly important part of spacecraft design. At PERSEI Space, we are developing propellant-free electrodynamic tether technologies that can provide autonomous deorbiting and in-space mobility by exploiting the interaction between a conductive tether, the ionospheric plasma and Earth's magnetic field.
Our work spans several complementary developments, from the upcoming E.T.PACK-F in-orbit demonstration of a bare electrodynamic tether with a hollow cathode, to the next-generation compact systems being developed through E.T.COMPACT, and the ECO-Tethers system engineering study with Astroscale France and Thales Alenia Space. Together, these activities are helping us move electrodynamic tether technology closer to practical applications for responsible space operations.
The conversations in Seville reinforced the importance of developing disposal solutions that are autonomous, reliable, scalable and economically viable. We are grateful to ESA, ESA Clean Space, the Agencia Espacial Española and the many organisations we had the opportunity to meet for the discussions and collaboration.
